My Predictions for the 2013 Emmy Awards

DRAMA SERIES

Breaking Bad    WINNER!
Downton Abbey
Game of Thrones
Homeland
House of Cards
Mad Men

This isn’t a shocking list, given the buzz surrounding all of these shows. But I would still make changes to the list, like the removal of Homeland and Downton Abbey, given their lacklustre seasons. Instead, I would add Orphan Black and Hannibal. While I loved both season six of Mad Men and the first half of Breaking Bad’s fifth season, I found season three of Game of Thrones to be superior.

Who Should Win: Game of Thrones

Who Will Win: Homeland or House of Cards (Homeland because the Emmys tend to award the same at least twice or House of Cards because it has the star studded cast)

LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA

Hugh Bonneville, Downton Abbey
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Jeff Daniels, The Newsroom      WINNER!
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Damian Lewis, Homeland
Kevin Spacey, House of Cards

Again another fairly predictable list. Yes, these guys are all great in their roles but there are other actors who also deserve the spotlight. Mads Mikkelsen from Hannibal and Timothy Olyphant from Justified should have been included over Jeff Daniels and Hugh Bonneville. However, there is one man this list that is overdue for a win and his name is John Hamm. Hamm gave his best performance of Don Draper to date and really needs a win before the show wraps up its last season.

Who Should Win: John Hamm, Mad Men

Who Will Win: Kevin Spacey, House of Cards (The Emmy’s love movie stars and Oscar winners)

LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA

Claire Danes, Homeland     WINNER!
Connie Britton, Nashville
Vera Farmiga, Bates Motel
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Kerry Washington, Scandal
Robin Wright Penn, House of Cards
Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey

Two points. One, Tatiana Maslany not being nominated is a crime. Second, anyone who watched the first season of Nashville knows that Hayden Panettiere was the best part, sorry Connie Britton/Mrs. Coach. That said, I love the new additions to the list, especially Vera Farmiga and Kerry Washington who were both absolute perfection in their respective roles. But Claire Danes still stands above the rest. I am not the biggest Homeland fan but Claire Danes’ emotionally diverse performance trumps everyone in the category.

Who Should Win: Claire Danes, Homeland

Who Will Win: Claire Danes, Homeland

SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA

Bobby Cannavale, Boardwalk Empire    WINNER!
Jonathan Banks, Breaking Bad
Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad
Jim Carter, Downton Abbey
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
Mandy Pantinkin, Homeland

Only one name is missing from the list and it’s Corey Stoll from House of Cards. That said, I would be happy if either Aaron Paul, Peter Dinklage or Jonathan Banks would take the Emmy. But if I had to choose I’d rather have Jonathan Banks win because his final performance on Breaking Bad is the most memorable part of the first half of Breaking Bad’s final season.

Who Should Win: Johnathan Banks, Breaking Bad

Who Will Win: Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA

Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad     WINNER!
Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey
Emelia Clarke, Game of Thrones
Christine Baranski, The Good Wife
Morena Bacharin, Homeland
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men

The only person who should have been nominated is Jennifer Carpenter. Her performance on Dexter surpassed that of Michael C. Hall and gave me a reason to keep watching Dexter as it ran into its final seasons. But if I had to choose, it’d have to be either Emilia Clarke or Anna Gunn. Clarke does have more standout scenes in her episodes but Gunn’s portrayal of Skyler was heartbreaking to watch. The scene where she walks into the pool is heart wrenching. She also plays the only great female character on an otherwise male dominated show.

Who Should Win: Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad

Who Will Win: Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey

COMEDY SERIES

30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
Girls
Louie
Modern Family
     WINNER!
Veep

Parks and Recreation and The Office not being nominated is a damn shame. Sorry Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory you guys are not as enjoyable as you used to be. The rest of them I love unconditionally but Louie is one the best comedic shows on TV. At times it can be both silly and emotional and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Who Should Win: Louie

Who Will Win: Modern Family

LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY

Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Jason Bateman, Arrested Development
Louis C.K., Louie
Don Cheadle, House of Lies
Matt Leblanc, Episodes
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory     WINNER!

Louis C.K. should win, that is all! Besides Alec Baldwin and Jim Parsons everyone else makes no sense to me.

Who Should Win: Louis C.K., Louie

Who Will Win: Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY

Laura Dern, Enlightened
Lena Dunham, Girls
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep      WINNER!
Amy Poehler, Parks & Recreation

Yay! A list I can finally agree on. I wouldn’t mind if any of these fine women would win but if I had to choose it would be Amy Poehler. If you watch Parks and Recreation than you know why. She is funny, sweet and pitch perfect as Leslie Knope.

Who Should Win: Amy Poehler. Parks and Recreation

Who Will Win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep (Who I’d be totally fine with winning too)

SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY

Adam Driver, Girls
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
Ed O’Neill, Modern Family
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Bill Hader, Saturday Night Live
Tony Hale, Veep     WINNER!

Ah, the Modern Family lovefest category. They are all fine actors but all three don’t need to be nominated because there are better performances out there. Performances by actors such as Max Greenfield, Nick Offerman and Jake Johnson. Although, I do love Tony Hale on Veep but I say give the award to Bill Hader for his work on SNL. He left the show this year and deserves some recognition for it.

Who Should Win: Bill Hader, Saturday Night Live

Who Will Win: Ty Burrell, Modern Family

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY

Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Jane Lynch, Glee
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Merritt Weaver, Nurse Jackie     WINNER!
Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory
Anna Chlumsky, Veep

I agree with some and disagree with others on this list but most of all I want Aubrey Plaza to be nominated for Parks and Recreation. You already Julie Bowen is going to take the Emmy, again, but maybe the Emmy’s will give it Sofia Vergara instead. I however would give to Anna Chlumsky with Jane Krakowski being my second pick.

Who Should Win: Anna Chlumsky, Veep

Who Will Win: Julie Bowen, Modern Family

MINISERIES OR MOVIE

American Horror Story: Asylum
Behind the Candelabra
        WINNER!
The Bible
Phil Spector
Political Animals
Top of the Lake

Does anyone care about this category? If you do, Behind the Candelabra will win and should win.

Who Should Win: Behind the Candelabra

Who Will Win: Behind the Candelabra

LEAD ACTOR, MINISERIES/MOVIE

Benedict Cumberbatch, Parade’s End
Michael Douglas, Behind the Candelabra        WINNER!
Matt Damon, Behind the Candelabra
Toby Jones, The Girl
Al Pacino, Phil Spector

Saw this list coming a mile away. I really did, honest. Either Michael Douglas or Matt Damon should win. They were both equally great in Behind the Candelabra. I give the advantage to Douglas cause he’s the veteran actor Matt Damon isn’t yet.

Who Should Win: Michael Douglas, Behind the Candelabra

Who Will Win: Michael Douglas, Behind the Candelabra

LEAD ACTRESS, MINISERIES/MOVIE

Jessica Lange, American Horror Story: Asylum
Laura Linney, The Big C: Hereafter         WINNER!
Helen Mirren, Phil Spector
Elisabeth Moss, Top of the Lake
Sigourney Weaver, Political Animals

They nominated Lange but not Sarah Paulson. I’m not interested. However, I’d choose Lange. She makes AHS and I can’t imagine the series without her.

Who Should Win: Jessica Lange, AHS: Asylum

Who Will Win: Jessica Lange, AHS: Asylum
